A Russian special envoy proposed building an underwater “Putin-Trump” railway tunnel under the Bering Strait to connect the U.S. and Russia, jointly explore Arctic resources, and symbolize unity.
After a phone call between Putin and Trump, the Russian side made this proposal; when Trump met with Zelenskyy, he asked for Zelenskyy’s thoughts on it. Zelenskyy said he disliked the proposal very much, and the U.S. personnel present all laughed.

Why is the CCP involved in a “U.S.-Canada-Russia-China railway”? Furthermore, why did the Russian side specifically mention Musk’s company to build it? The terrain of the seabed across the 80-plus-kilometer Bering Strait is very suitable for energy pipelines and tunnel construction. It is the only potential land corridor connecting Eurasia and North America.
But this Bering Strait tunnel, Russia isn’t actually that keen on building it either, nor does it want to drag CCP interests into matters between the U.S. and Russia at this time.
Moreover, on the Russian side is the Chukchi Peninsula, a base for Russia’s Pacific Fleet, and also an export channel for Arctic liquefied natural gas and rare metals. Trump doing this both shows he is open and above-board in his communications with Russia, not selling out Ukraine’s interests, and also manages to reject the proposal without affecting next week’s meeting with Putin.
This is also telling Russia: Don’t think that just because America is giving a signal that could open the door to economic recovery, you can just try to bring in CCP funds. If you want to play that angle, don’t even think about restoring relations with America.
Having Zelenskyy come out to oppose it expresses the unity of values between the U.S. and its allies, the unity of the camp, jointly guarding the Arctic defense line.
The purpose of President Trump’s “alignment with Russia” is to destroy the CCP. For the CCP to still want to get involved, get a piece of the pie, and expand its infiltration capabilities—it’s truly overthinking.

For the CCP, the Arctic is just about resources; but Russia is an Arctic nation. For it, the Arctic is resources, a national security buffer zone, a strategic energy reserve, and also a bargaining chip in the competition between great powers like the U.S. and Russia. Russia cannot possibly hand over its Arctic interests to the CCP. Russia is just pretending to cooperate with the CCP, then pushing this onto the geopolitical negotiating table, using this chip to probe America and see where to make its next move.
Musk + Chinese capital is a double-layered scheme. Russia is just seeing if America is willing to cooperate with Russia in the Arctic. If the U.S. side is silent or responds positively, it means they can try again, that there is room for negotiation; but if it’s a humorous “cold treatment” like Trump’s, it means the time is not right, and the U.S. side is holding fast to its security bottom line. But for Russia, this is when it can go ask the CCP for money. The Russian side can say to the CCP: I’ve already put this on the table, you have to invest money, otherwise this can’t be pushed forward any further. The CCP cannot refuse.
Russia wanted to use this “Russia-U.S. Arctic cooperation” to scare Europe and Ukraine, waging public opinion warfare and psychological warfare, but it was blocked by the perfect cooperation between Trump and Zelenskyy.
